DAY 11: BANGKOK THREE TEMPLE AND KLONG TOUR (B/L)
We will be picked up at 08:00 to embark on a behind-the-scenes journey into Buddhist culture. We will begin our morning with a visit to Wat Pho, arguably Bangkok’s most enchanting temple.
We will arrive just as the resident monks gather for their morning chants, allowing us to witness this deeply spiritual ritual and gain a better sense of Thailand’s Buddhist heritage. After the chants, we will take a leisurely walk around Wat Pho and explore the vast collection of religious treasures on display. We will see the famed reclining Buddha image, which stretches an impressive 148ft in length, learn about the symbolism of the Buddha’s intricate footprint and observe devout worshippers making offerings to this revered image. The tour then proceeds to the nearby Grand Palace, which has served as the seat of Thailand’s revered Royal family for more than two centuries. We will stroll through the extensive grounds, pausing to explore the various temples, throne halls, and museums within the compound.
Pay homage to the Emerald Buddha, the most revered Buddhist image in Thailand and delve into the mysteries of its origins.
Then we will have a midday break for lunch at a riverside restaurant, savoring delicious Thai cuisine while taking in fabulous views. Afterward, we will continue our exploration with a visit to Wat Trimitr, located on the edge of Chinatown, which houses the world’s largest solid gold Buddha.
There is still more! Next we will embark on a long-tail boat journey, leaving behind the city’s high-rises to venture through the serene canals upon which the city was originally built. We will catch glimpses of days gone by as we pass through charming neighborhoods built along the water’s edge.
Returning to the main waterway, the Chao Phraya River, you will arrive at Wat Arun, meaning ‘Temple of the Dawn.’ This riverside pagoda, dating back to the 17th century, invites onlookers to wander among its prangs (spires), the largest of which is designed to resemble Mount Meru from Hindu mythology. Marvel at its incredible decoration adorned with ceramic tiles depicting figures of Chinese soldiers and animals.
Following this insightful exploration of Bangkok, you will return to the hotel in the late afternoon.
DAY 12: BANGKOK FLOATING MARKETS (B)
We will be picked up at 07:00 to embark on a journey away from Bangkok’s city center, visiting local markets and countryside neighborhoods. We will enjoy a one-hour drive that takes us away from the high-rises and into a landscape of lush surroundings and traditional wooden houses.
Our first stop will be at a local railway station where a bustling country market thrives along the train tracks. As a train approaches the station, we will see vendors swiftly clearing their stalls from the train’s path. After the train departs, we can watch them set up shop and resume their business as usual.
From here, you we proceed to the famous Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. While most of the stalls cater to tourists nowadays, Damnoen Saduak remains an excellent example of a traditional floating market. Take a leisurely stroll and admire the floating shops, many of which sell fresh fruits and typical Thai snacks.
Leaving the main market area, we will embark on a relaxing paddleboat ride. Cruise through an old section of the floating market and navigate a labyrinth of quiet canals. We will see houses built along the waterways and catch glimpses of local life in this rural Thai province. After this insightful countryside exploration, you will return to Bangkok’s modern city center.
